Best of the Blogosphere: February 23-29, 2008

Wow -- OK, lots of baskets and boxes this week and one really, really great new idea from Erika Martin over at Stampin' Mama Designs.  She's going to start a weekly feature with her mom (blog: Spatulas, Corkscrews and Suitcases) that is food related.  It will be crafting and food together!  This week's post was awesome -- a birthday cake in a can, complete with candle.  I loved it.  It hit me at a really timely moment when I have several friends with birthdays and I need several small little happy gifts!

As always, remember to hit the "read more" button at the bottom of the screen in order to see the full list with pictures.  Also, if you'd like to be considered for BOB, please leave a comment on this post and I'll start reading your blog too!

Soft Sky Heartfelt Thanks

February Workshop_0006web

I haven't broken out the Heartfelt Thanks set in a while and it seemed like time.  It's funny, because this is one of the sets that comes with the demonstrator kit for SU.  I really didn't want this set, but I figured that they recommend the sets that they feel have the most versatility.  After two years, I still reach for this set, and I'm glad that I own it.

This card is very straight forward and quick.  I think I made this in about 5 minutes.  I stamped in Soft Sky along the bottom of the card.  I topped it off with a white panel that had the stems in Old Olive and the blooms still in Soft Sky.  The entire thing is matted on Chocolate Chip and popped up on dimensionals.  Added bonus for this style is that you can change the sentiment to just about anything and have the card still work.

Happy Hello

February Workshop_0005web

This is one of the cards I made for the February stamp club.  I was totally inspired by Debbie Olsen, over at Thinking Inking.

For this card, I used the SU Ginger Blossom DSP, River Rock and Groovy Guava cardstock.  I ran a Stampin' Up roller stamp, in River Rock, over River Rock card stock.  I didn't own a River
Rock cartridge, so I just ran the stamp over my ink pad several times and then ran it across the paper.  It worked better than expected, and I know I'll be trying this concept again.

The hardest part of the card was using the All in a Row stamp set to pull off the faux stitching.  It was really difficult to get an even impression over the two layers of paper.  My recommendation is too rock the stamp towards the bottom layer to get a good impression.

Scrapbook Saturday

February Workshop_0012web

This is the 6x6 card/double scrapbook page that we did in the February stamping workshop.  I read about a bazillion stamping blogs and saw many pictures from the recent CHA convention.  One of the pictures was a single scrapbook page that was similar to this one.  I was searching for inspiration and this fit the bill.

We punched out various circles and scallops from Berry Bliss SU DSP.  Everyone got to pick what colors worked for them. Since I have boys, my page was more brown than pink, but some girls went the other way.  We also embossed red hearts from the Simply Said and Holiday Blitz stamp sets.  Those were cut out and "popped up" on Stampin' Up dimensionals.  The sentiment is from Define Your Life, and is also raised up.

Now, to get some pictures of those rascally boys!  I am going to try to get some really high contrast black and white shots for this page -- I think it will "pop" right off the page with this color scheme.

Scrapbook Saturday

laugh-every-day

When I  was lucky enough to catch this picture of Obi, I just had to scrap it.  It's a terrible picture-- it's in terrible light and he's blurry-- but it just captures his soul.  It makes me laugh.

Almost all of my supplies came from Sugarplum Paperie.  The red and the polka dot papers came from the Sorbet Mini Kit (only a $1!!!!!!).  I also used this awesome digital freebie overlay.  The sentiment came from the weekly quote challenge from Designer Digitals (I think).

To make this page, I took two identical pictures and erased the background on one of them. the words are sandwiched between the photos to make it look like they are in the background.  I did seriously consider just having the picture with the "Laugh Every Day" right on top of the cat, but after some goofing around, I like it better like this.  I think it's more "fun".

Happy Valentine's Day!

grid valentine

It isn't too late to make a card for today!

This is just a simple Valentine -- quick to whip up if you know how to use a Stamp-a-ma-jig (SAMJ).

I stamped the rectangle from the Label Classics SU set, positioning it with the SAMJ to make sure I had everything "square".  Next, I stamped my labels from the SU Jumbo Alphabet set.  I used the SAMJ on this too -- to ensure that the letters were located where I wanted them to be.

The heart is stamped from the Simply Said stamp set (my only set with hearts).  I embossed it and then cut it out and popped it up.

The sentiment is from the Hugs and Wishes set.

Have a Happy Valentine's Day.  Get off the computer and go kiss someone you love.

Scrapbook Saturday

I reached a milestone in my scrapbooking life -- I'm officially caught up.  This is, I'm sure, because I've prepaid for 2 crops and I'm on a design team!  Anyway, my rusty brain is getting all kinds of sore trying come up with layouts.  Thank goodness, there is always a holiday, birthday or sporting event around every corner!!!

my-valentines_web

I made this page with the new kit "Love Actually" from Sugarplum Paperie.  I softened the background paper using a free overlay also from Nicole.  The staples are from Scrap Girls and the rest is all me, baby.  I'm really pleased with how it came out.

Tricks and Tips:  the brackets are actually a clipping mask -- I wanted them to match the lettering.  I pulled the definition of "love" off the Webster's Online Dictionary site, and just tweaked it.

If you have any scrapping suggestions, leave them here!  I'd love the help :D
